Santoshi Mata Vrat Method of worship

Where there is contentment, true happiness naturally follows—Santoshi Mata is the divine embodiment of this eternal truth. Observing her fast is not merely a ritual, but a spiritual discipline that nurtures patience, faith, and संतोष (contentment) in life.

  • Wake up before sunrise and clean your home, as purity is the first step toward devotion.
  • After bathing, establish an idol or picture of Santoshi Mata at a clean and peaceful place in your home.
  • Place a कलश (vessel) filled with water before the Mata, and keep a bowl of jaggery (gud) and roasted gram (chana) on top—symbolizing simplicity and संतोष.
  • Light a ghee lamp, which represents the removal of darkness and the awakening of divine energy.
  • Offer rice (akshat), flowers, fragrance, coconut, and red cloth (chunri) to the Mata.
  • Offer jaggery and gram as prasad with full devotion.
  • Begin the vrat katha by chanting “Jai Santoshi Mata”.

Santoshi Mata Vrat Katha (Story)

Once upon a time, there lived an elderly mother who had only one son—the center of her life. When the son got married, a new phase began in the household. The mother would make the daughter-in-law do all the household chores but would not even provide her proper food. The daughter-in-law silently endured everything with patience and humility.

The son witnessed all this, yet he could not gather the courage to confront his mother. After much thought, one day he said, “Mother, I wish to go abroad to earn my fortune.” The mother agreed without hesitation.

Before leaving, he went to his wife and said, “I am going far away. Give me something as your remembrance.” With teary eyes, she replied, “I have nothing worthy to give…” and fell at his feet crying. Her hands, stained with the marks of labor, left an imprint on his shoes—that became her only token of love.

After the son left, the mother’s harshness increased. One day, deeply saddened, the daughter-in-law went to a temple. There, she saw several women performing a पूजा with devotion. She humbly asked about the ritual.

The women replied, “We are observing the Santoshi Mata Vrat. This fast removes all sorrows and brings peace and prosperity. On Fridays, one should worship Mata with jaggery and gram, and strictly avoid anything sour.”

A spark of hope ignited in her heart. From that day onward, she began observing the vrat with complete faith and discipline.

As time passed, the blessings of Mata started manifesting. Soon, she received a letter from her husband, followed by money. Her faith deepened. She prayed, “O Mother, when my husband returns, I will complete this vrat with proper उद्यापन (conclusion ritual).”

Meanwhile, in a distant land, Santoshi Mata appeared in her husband’s dream and asked, “Why do you not return home?” He replied, “My goods are unsold, and I have not received payment yet.”

But by Mata’s grace, everything changed. Business flourished overnight, debts were repaid, and his employer granted him permission to return home.

Upon returning, he gave wealth to his mother and wife. The daughter-in-law immediately began preparations for the vrat’s उद्यापन. However, where there is happiness, envy often follows. A neighboring woman, jealous of her joy, instructed her children to demand something sour during the meal.

During the feast, the children insisted on eating something sour. To avoid breaking the rule, the daughter-in-law gave them money. But the children used it to buy tamarind and consumed it.

This violation displeased the Mata. Soon, royal messengers arrived to arrest her husband. Realizing the mistake, the daughter-in-law repented deeply and resolved to perform the vrat again with complete devotion and correctness.

This time, she followed every rule sincerely. Santoshi Mata became pleased. Soon, all troubles vanished, and within nine months, she was blessed with a beautiful son. The family, once filled with suffering, now lived in peace, prosperity, and contentment.

Importance of Santoshi Mata Vrat (Why You Should Observe This Fast)

This vrat is not just about fulfilling desires—it is a path toward inner transformation. In today’s restless world, Santoshi Mata Vrat teaches us:

  • Contentment is the foundation of true happiness.
  • Patience and faith can overcome any hardship.
  • Simplicity and discipline bring stability in life.
  • Following principles leads to lasting success.

A devotee who observes this vrat with a pure heart gradually experiences mental peace, family harmony, and financial stability.

Santoshi Mata Vrat Udyapan Vidhi (Conclusion Ritual)

After completing 16 consecutive Fridays, the vrat must be concluded properly. On the final Friday, perform the same पूजा, कथा, and आरती with devotion.

Feed 8 young boys with kheer, puri, and chana. Offer them dakshina and bananas as prasad, and respectfully bid them farewell.

Ensure that no sour food is consumed or offered on this day. Finally, partake in the prasad yourself and express gratitude to the Mata—because where there is contentment, there is true bliss.
