॥शांताकारं भुजङ्ग शयनम पद्म नाभं सुरेशम॥
During the sacred dialogue of the Mahabharata era, King Yudhishthira humbly asked Lord Krishna:
“O Lord of the Universe! What is the name and glory of the Ekadashi that falls during the Krishna Paksha of Jyeshtha month? Kindly explain how this fast frees devotees from sins and grants divine blessings.”
Lord Shri Krishna replied with compassion:
“O King! This holy Ekadashi is known as Apara Ekadashi and also as Achala Ekadashi. Scriptures such as the Brahma Vaivarta Purana and Bhavishya Purana describe its greatness in detail. The word ‘Apara’ means limitless or boundless, because the spiritual merit earned from this vrat is immeasurable.”
On this sacred day, devotees worship Lord Trivikrama, the majestic form of Lord Vishnu. This divine incarnation appeared when Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana and asked King Bali for three steps of land. With His cosmic form, Lord Trivikrama measured the Earth in one step, the heavens in the second, and for the third step King Bali surrendered his own head in devotion.
This divine event symbolizes that the entire universe exists within the feet of Shri Hari Vishnu.
Apara Ekadashi is not merely a ritual fast; it is considered a powerful path of inner purification. Hindu scriptures state that observing this vrat with sincere devotion helps remove the effects of sinful actions such as dishonesty, false testimony, disrespect toward teachers, spreading deception, selfishness, and insulting others.
Lord Krishna explains that even a person burdened with mistakes can attain spiritual upliftment through true repentance and devotion to Lord Vishnu. Shri Hari does not judge only actions; He also sees the purity and surrender within the devotee’s heart.
The scriptures further state that the spiritual merit gained from observing Apara Ekadashi equals the blessings received from:
• Bathing in Pushkar during Kartik Purnima
• Offering Pind Daan on the banks of River Ganga
• Pilgrimage to Kedarnath and Badrinath
• Holy bath at Kurukshetra during a solar eclipse
• Sacred charity and acts of dharma
Because of its immense spiritual power, Apara Ekadashi is compared to:
• A blazing fire that burns accumulated sins
• The rising sun that removes darkness
• A divine axe that cuts the tree of negative karma
Therefore, devotees observe this vrat with faith, discipline, and complete surrender to Lord Vishnu.
In ancient times, there lived a righteous and Vishnu-devoted king named Mahidhwaj. He was kind, truthful, and deeply devoted to Lord Vishnu. However, his younger brother Vajradhwaj was cruel, jealous, and filled with hatred.
Unable to tolerate the goodness and popularity of his elder brother, Vajradhwaj secretly murdered King Mahidhwaj one night and buried his body beneath a Peepal tree in a forest.
Due to this untimely death, the king’s soul became trapped in a restless ghostly existence and began haunting the same tree.
One day, the great sage Dhaumya Rishi passed through the forest. Through his spiritual powers, he understood the painful past of the wandering spirit. The compassionate sage realized that the soul still longed for liberation through Shri Hari’s grace.
Dhaumya Rishi observed the sacred Apara Ekadashi Vrat with full devotion and worshipped Lord Vishnu sincerely. After completing the vrat, he dedicated all the spiritual merit to the suffering spirit of King Mahidhwaj.
By the divine power of the Ekadashi vrat, the king was instantly freed from the ghostly realm. His form became radiant with divine light, and a celestial aircraft descended from heaven.
Offering prayers to the sage and remembering Lord Vishnu with gratitude, King Mahidhwaj ascended toward the heavenly realms.
This sacred story teaches devotees that Lord Vishnu never abandons those who sincerely surrender to Him. No matter how lost a soul becomes, Shri Hari’s compassion and the power of devotion can guide it toward liberation and divine peace.
“Whoever observes Apara Ekadashi with devotion and faith attains the blessings of Lord Vishnu and moves closer to the path of Vaikuntha.”
